The government has begun the phased evacuation of its citizens from Iran, amid growing regional instability.

The first group of 29 Indonesian nationals departed from Baku, Azerbaijan, on Monday June 23, 2025 and arrived in Jakarta, on the following Tuesday, according to officials from the Foreign Ministry.

The evacuees had traveled overland or via connecting flights to Baku, where they boarded commercial aircraft operated by three separate airlines, arranged in coordination with Indonesian authorities.

"The government is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready for further evacuations depending on developments in Iran," a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said in a statement released Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

The evacuation follows increasing concern over the security of Indonesian citizens in Iran, especially students and migrant workers, as regional tensions continue to escalate. Authorities are aiming to complete the entire repatriation process by Thursday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to release a formal update later this week on the progress of the operation and provide an outline for the next phase of evacuations.

President of the Indonesian Student Association in Iran (PPI Iran), Agiel Laksamana Putra, confirmed the first batch of evacuees had departed safely. "We are grateful to the government for responding quickly. Everyone in the first group is in good health and high spirits," he said in a statement from Baku.

According to Agiel, the evacuees in this phase consist largely of students and professionals temporarily residing in Iran, most of whom were based in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. The logistical operations in Azerbaijan were facilitated by the Indonesian Embassy and coordinated through local authorities.

Government officials reiterated that the evacuation is being conducted via civilian flights rather than military repatriation, as the airspace around Iran remains partially operational through neighboring countries.

With the situation on the ground in Iran remaining fluid, the Foreign Ministry has urged all Indonesians still in the country to stay in contact with the nearest Indonesian diplomatic post and to register via the PeduliWNI platform to ensure their inclusion in subsequent evacuation efforts.
