RI-Netherlands seal greenhouse-based horticulture partnership to tackle food security
Indonesia and the Netherlands have agreed to cooperate in the development of greenhouse-based horticulture as a strategic move to enhance food security and promote sustainable agriculture.
The commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Sudaryono, and Guido Landheer, Deputy Director-General for Agro at the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature, and Food Quality, which was held in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Sudaryono emphasized the importance of involving younger generation in modern farming practices as part of efforts to ensure the regeneration of Indonesia's farming community.
“We need more young Indonesians to get involved in horticulture using greenhouse technology,” he said, while underlining the need for innovation-driven youth participation.
He acknowledged that while greenhouse farming may require a significant upfront investment compared to traditional methods, it offers long-term benefits through higher productivity and cost efficiency.
“In the beginning, it may seem more expensive to grow fruits and vegetables using greenhouse systems, but over time, this approach proves more efficient and sustainable,” he said.
To support this shift, the Indonesian government is committed to facilitating young people who wish to pursue careers in agriculture.
“Young Indonesians interested in agriculture must be supported. As Deputy Minister, I and my entire team are committed to helping them gain training, skills, and knowledge in horticulture,” Sudaryono said.
Meanwhile, Guido Landheer highlighted that the Netherlands’ intention is not to boost exports, but to collaborate by sharing innovation and understanding Indonesia’s unique agricultural context.
“We bring innovation, but we also want to understand the local situation. That’s why we are here − to learn from Indonesia, share knowledge, and work together going forward,” Landheer said.
As one of the world’s leading agricultural exporters, the Netherlands has sent a delegation including companies specializing in seed supply, greenhouse technology, financing, and agricultural training. This multi-sectoral approach aims to accelerate Indonesia’s transition to a more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive agricultural system.
The partnership reflects both countries’ shared vision of addressing global food challenges through cooperation, knowledge exchange, and empowerment of future farmers.
