Indonesia-Singapore strengthen ties amid global uncertainty
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong held a meeting in Singapore on Monday, June 16, 2025, underscoring both nations’ commitment to deepening ties.
Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, told the media after the event that the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
“President Prabowo emphasized that fostering a strong relationship with Singapore is a matter of national interest, especially amid today’s uncertain global dynamics,” Sugiono said on Monday.
The day began with a State welcome ceremony and continued with a bilateral meeting between President Prabowo and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam of Singapore. A closed-door, two-person session between President Prabowo and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong followed, leading to a broader discussion between both national delegations. Key outcomes included the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) involving ministers from both sides.
Foreign Minister Sugiono noted, “Good relations with our neighboring countries, especially one as close as Singapore, are a valuable national asset. President Prabowo reminded all Indonesian ministers present that maintaining strong bilateral ties with Singapore is a strategic imperative.”
As part of the ceremonial proceedings, President Prabowo was also honored by having a newly hybridized orchid species named after his late mother, symbolizing the deepening people-to-people ties.
The visit concluded with a luncheon hosted by the President of Singapore. Although an informal dinner invitation was extended by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, it was not part of the formal itinerary.
